2016 Centennial Conference on Democracy and Education

The Centennial Conference on Democracy and Education (1916-2016)

Take out your calendars and mark these dates: April 7 and 8, 2016. The John Dewey Society will be celebrating the Centennial of the publication of John Dewey’s magisterial Democracy and Education in Washington DC. We want every one interested in advancing democratic education to participate.

The meeting will take place in the historic Thurgood Marshall Center – in the very rooms in which Marshall and his colleagues developed the legal strategy that resulted in the Brown v. Board decision. It will be free and open to the public, taking place immediately prior to the annual meeting of the Dewey Society and the American Educational Research Association on April 8-12, 2016

New Website and New Call for Reviewers for the Journal of Educational Controversy

Working with the Berkeley Electronic Press, the Journal of Educational Controversy now offers more flexibility and options for both authors and readers. In particular, authors can now open an account, submit their manuscripts, make revisions, and complete the peer-review process through the online system. In addition, the journal’s 10th Year Anniversary Issue will be published this coming fall. The journal has grown significantly as a voice in education. As the journal continues to grow, there is an increased need for more reviewers. Call for Papers: Dewey-theme at OVPES

The John Dewey Society invites scholars to present a Dewey-themed paper at the Ohio Valley Philosophy of Education Conference annual meeting on September 11-13, 2015 at the Bergamo Center in Dayton, Ohio.  A special Dewey Society-sponsored panel will be on the conference program. The OVPES conference theme this year is “Teaching as Labor, Learning as Work: Educational Ideals and the Factory of Knowledge.”

JDS 2015 Annual Conference Program

Call for Papers

Dewey’s Democracy and Education a Century Later: A Source of and a Resource for European Educational Theory and Practice


On the centennial anniversary of the publication of Dewey’s Democracy and Education (New York: Macmillan, 1916), a symposium of the European Journal of Pragmatism and American Philosophy intends to explore both the epoch-making significance and the topicality of the (ideas advocated in the) book for the development of European educational reflection. It is in light of this permanent and deep influence that we invite scholars to contribute to the call for papers to this special issue.

NEW Book: Dewey’s Earlier Logical Inquiry

The John Dewey Society is pleased to announce a new book by one of its members titled, Dewey’s Earlier Logical Inquiry. This book provides an analysis of Dewey’s pre-1916 work on logic and its relationship to his better-known work from 1938.

James Scott Johnston is a Jointly Appointed Associate Professor of Education and Philosophy at Memorial University in Canada and at Memorial University of Newfoundland.

The Ohio Valley Philosophy of Education Society (OVPES) invites proposals for the 2015 annual meeting to be held at the Bergamo Conference Center in Dayton, Ohio, Friday through Sunday, September 11-13, 2015. The John Dewey Society is pleased to announce a new book by its members titled, Living As Learning: John Dewey in the 21st CenturyThe book features Dewey scholars Jim Garrison and Larry Hickman in dialogue with Daisaku Ikeda.

Living As Learning is a timely publication for educators looking to revive the creative, humanistic, and social dimensions of teaching and learning. Interview with Steven Fesmire, Author of the NEW Book, Dewey

In this interview, Fesmire discusses what first attracted him to Dewey, the writing style of his new book, new features included in the book, such as a “lost book” written by Dewey in the 1940s and only recently discovered, the relevance of Dewey today, and what Dewey might make of today’s American education system.

JDS Social at UCEA Conference in Washington, D.C.

john-dewey-society-ucea-conferenceIn November, JDS Members and some new friends joined together in Washington, D.C., for a fun social gathering during the Annual Conference of the University Council for Educational Administration.  It was a great way to relax after the conference, to network with professionals doing good work, and to build awareness about the John Dewey Society.  We recruited some new members, publicized the 2015 JDS Annual Conference in Chicago, and built some fresh partnerships as the 2016 Democracy and Education-themed Annual Conference gets planned.  All-in-all, it was a wonderful time spent with friends.

Southeast Philosophy Education Society (SEPES): The 67th annual meeting of the Southeast Philosophy Education Society (SEPES) from February 6-7, 2015 located in Memphis, TN. SEPES provides a friendly forum for dialogue and the exchange of philosophical ideas related to a broad variety of educational topics, including, but not limited to, the role of philosophy in clarifying the relationship of school to society; democracy and education; issues of diversity and commonality in education; educational policy; school reform; and the integration of theory and practice.

New Faces on Our Board

John Dewey Society is governed by a Board of Directors who serve three year terms, and this year we’re delighted to welcome four new members to their ranks.

Doris Santoro is an Associate Professor of Education at Bowdoin College where she teaches courses in educational studies and teacher education.  Her current scholarship explores the moral dimensions of teacher dissatisfaction through philosophical-qualitative inquiry.  Dewey’s ethics, faith in teachers’ capacities and his belief in the integration of empirical and philosophical research inspire her work. A recent publication is “‘I was becoming increasingly uneasy about the profession and what was being asked of me’: Preserving Integrity in Teaching,” Curriculum Inquiry (2013).

Kurt Stemhagen is an associate professor at Virginia Commonwealth University where he works to use his teaching, scholarship, and service to help increase equity and opportunity in his community and to add to social justice discourse in his discipline (philosophy of education). He is a founder of Richmond Teachers for Social Justice (a grass roots, Deweyan group established to promote teacher participation in educational and social policy decisions) and he works closely with Richmond City Public Schools on several projects.  He sees JDS as a very important organization both for its role in supporting Dewey-inspired scholarship and for its commitment to linking scholarly realms to broader social realities.

Sarah Stitzlein is an Associate Professor in the College of Education at the University of Cincinnati.  Her research focuses on issues of democracy, political agency, and equality in education. The work of John Dewey is integrated throughout her scholarship, featured predominantly in her most recent book, Teaching for Dissent: Citizenship Education and Political Activism (2012), where she explores how Dewey and other Progressive Era Pragmatists improved political dissent and can be drawn on in educational contexts today to improve the response of schools to our shifting political climate.

Terri S. Wilson is an Assistant Professor in the College of Education and Human Services at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.  Her research focuses on the conceptual foundations and normative significance of education policy, including issues raised by choice, marketization and parent engagement. She has drawn on Dewey to explore the significance of small school reform, parents’ interests in school choice and definitions of ‘scientific’ research in education.  Along with fellow new Board member Doris Santoro, Dr. Wilson has recently edited a special issue of Studies in Philosophy of Education on the theme of philosophy of education and empirical research.
