4-6:00pm School and Society Forum at the Barnes Foundation

Barnes Foundation, 2025 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy, Philadelphia, 19130.

Our Forum this year takes advantage of Philadelphia as the home to the Albert C. Barnes collection housed in the beautiful new Barnes Foundation headquarters, about one mile from conference hotels. The Forum panelists will discuss Dewey’s Art as Experience and omitted pictures from the original publication found in the Barnes Foundation Archives, and explore the relevance of Dewey’s theory of aesthetics to the model of the 21st century art museum that supports learning in the visual arts within a region. Organized by Carolyn Berenato (St. Joseph’s University) and Jennifer Katz-Buonincontro (Drexel University).

6-8:00pm First Fridays at the Barnes – Featuring Barnes Collections and Special Exhibition of Yinka Shonibare Mbe: Magic Ladders

We invite all members to participate in the First Friday monthly event where the Barnes collections are open to the public, and ticketed guests can listen to live music and consume refreshments (cash bar). This will serve in lieu of our JDS reception this year. This event is also gathering members of the Arts in Learning SIG, the Arts-Based Educational Research SIG, and the Visual Arts and Performative Inquiry SIG, so there will be lots of opportunities to meet meet and mingle with new folks.

Important: You must have a ticket to get into First Fridays, and we cannot guarantee available tickets at the door on the night of the event. We will pre-purchase tickets for any JDS member who makes a reservation with us, simply by emailing Kyle Greenwalt at greenwlt@msu.edu. Email by March 17 and let him know you want to attend the First Fridays event, and we will make sure to have a ticket held for you at the Barnes that evening.
